If your puppy is one and a half to five months old a very viable option is puppy preschool. As the name suggests this is a preliminary training session where emphasis is placed on teaching the puppy to be friendly with people and its own kind.

Once your dog crosses the 5 month mark you can send him/her to the first level training session which lasts for 2 to 21/2 months. This is a more advanced training session than the preschool. Your dog will be taught to sit, heal, come, stay and to walk on the leash like a good dog without pushing or pulling.

The second level session is an upgraded version of the first level training course .In this session all the commands are taught in detail for a period of 8 to 10 weeks. The session also includes obeying commands given by other people besides the trainer

However, your dog is expected to obey some basic commands taught by the owner or should have already gone through the first level training session to get into the second level course. Once he/she gets through the second level, you can enroll him into the third level or the advanced course. This course again has the same duration of 8- 10 weeks as the second level course. It elaborately covers the concepts taught at the previous level

Dogs will usually only obey commands when the person giving the command is in sight. This training session teaches dogs to obey commands even when you are not in sight. They are also taught to walk without restraints such as leashes. Passing through this course will make your dog eligible to get into the Canine Good Citizen Training program.

The Canine Good Citizen Training program is the most advanced dog training course available. Your dog will have to go through all the other training courses to get into this program. The training and the test are quite grueling. And your dog can only pass if he/she is extremely obedient and well behaved. There is no fixed duration for this program. It lasts as long as it takes your dog to learn everything to perfection.
