reduction of corporate energy consumption and practices that pollute
the environment.
Achieving sustainability requires changing the way in which we operate
to reduce the need for energy consumption, as well as the utilisation
of alternative methods and practices.
These changed practises will bring about reduced energy use with a goal
to address environmental and social issues, while producing less carbon
dioxide and materials that are not sustainable to our environment,
creating a platform for businesses to launch Corporate Social
Responsibility within their organisation.
Sustainability and Your Business
Businesses are increasingly incorporating Corporate Social
Responsibility (CSR) into the work place. CSR encompasses
sustainability strategies within all practises and forward thinking of
an organisation.
Corporate Social Responsibility companies include in their economic
business strategies environmental and social strategies. These
strategies are over and above the businesses legal requirement
This enables reporting on three levels.
Reporting upon economic, environment and social also know as triple bottom line reporting.
The three "bottom lines" are:
- Economic: The economic aspect of triple bottom line reporting is a way of describing the overall financial impact that the organisation has on its entire environment. That is, it looks beyond the internal profit generated within the organisation itself.
- Environmental: An environmentally sustainable system must maintain a stable base of renewable resources. This includes biodiversity, atmospheric stability and other ecosystem functions not ordinarily classed as economic issues.
- Social: Social responsibility is needed to achieve and
maintain personal health, through means of physical, mental and
psychological activities. These include:
- Gaining opportunities for meaningful employment.
- Improving knowledge and understanding of the world around us.
- Finding opportunities to express creativity within the workplace and home, whilst creating a sense of belonging through active participation.
