I was brought up in Hong Kong, and a visit to Thailand, back in the
80's was effortless and low-priced to do. I have fond memories of such
days.
We could easily jump on a flight on Friday night and
return late on Sunday evening. It was just 2 hours from Hong Kong to
the Thai capital, and another 1 to 2 hours, depending on the beach we
chose.
Even Bangkok was a delight. The excitement of the rowdy city and its incredible markets made such a change from polluted.
The
world was our shell back then. Even as youngsters still taking our A
levels, we could raise enough money for the very low-priced fares to
Thailand. We clustered a group of friends together and blasted away to
Thailand for a weekend.
In the 80’s, the majority of Europe and
America had a harder time to travel to Thailand. Non-stop air travel
from those places were still not available.
Therefore, we had
beaches of Thailand alone. Lying on the white, thin sand, our 48 hours
in paradise were passed executing little more than sleep and a few dips
in the emerald green water.
My friend travelled in Phi Phi in
2004 when the tsunami hit. My friend kept in mind small episodes of
that horrible event. But my friend does remember how the wonderful
people did everything to aid everyone they could. The people of
Thailand who were left without even a home standing, offered all they
had to the confused visitors.
It says everything about the
people. This says all you need to know about the country. It is,
nonetheless, magnificent in our world, in the face of the God’s attempt
to tear it down.
