One gene may curb its carrier against a number of cancers, as shown in new research.

2 variants of the B-MYB gene found in up to 50% of the world's population are less prominent in people living with cancer, as reported in the Nature journal.

The Institute of Child Health's Dr Arturo Sala said it might well show to be a "key find" in cancer.

The charity Cancer Research UK stressed that further research might explain how it might help prevent the cancer.

More research had already pointed to B-MYB having a role in the spread and development of cancer.

It has been found to be over-active in many different cancers.

The newest exams tested just
over 400 people with either colon cancer, a tumour in the brain known as neuroblastoma, also known as chronic myeloid leukaemia.

Their type of the B-MYB gene was analysed and compared to the types found in 230 "controls" - volunteer patients with no known cancer.
