With a tower of 27 floors, this hotel is located in one of the most important arteries in the capital, on a slight natural elevation of the land, to more than 150 meters on the sea level. Such a location allows you to observe the hotel from diverse places of the city -constituting reference point for any misled walker and it is said that even its silhouette can be sighted beyond the seas, when you arrive by ship at the Cuban capital. In the immediate environment of the Habana Libre Tryp is the ice parlor Coppelia, the most impressive ice parlor in the world; the Cuban Institute of Radio and Television; the Cultural Center Yara, with its cinema, video rooms and exhibition gallery; the bicentennial University of Havana, as well as bookstores, restaurants, cafeterias... framed everything in the well-known area for La Rampa.
The artistic works of different generations of Cuban creators occupy the areas of the Habana Libre hotel, as paintings, murals, ceramic statues... All are distributed inside this construction of the 50´s.
Inaugurated on March19, 1958, this sky-scraper is compounded by a basement that occupies the entire block, and a leaning vertical block that is supported in the basement. Since 1997, in the wide lobby the musical fountain called Clepsydra is located, a piece of work by the Cuban sculptress Rita Longa (1912-2000). Just as its name indicates, it evokes the clock of water that the Greeks and Roman used before the hourglass existed. Of nine meters of high and a meter of diameter, stainless steel and glass was used in its making. With a central nucleus of metal, it has twelve glass pieces that represent the hours of the day. Seconds before every hour, it actions its amazing combination of lights, sound and water: a musical piece is listened and the lights are on in combination with the music. Then a light beam hits the corresponding hour glass.
In total, this five-star hotel, which has the EXCEL category, has 574 available rooms, of which 32 are junior suites; four, Mister Suites, and two, governor suites. From the very moment the hotel was born as project at the end of the decade of the 50´s, the current Habana Libre Tryp hotel was conceived as an installation that, starting from its own facade, anyone could breathe art for all sides.
