Real World Project Management: Communications

Have you ever been on the side of the conversation where all you heard was a voice like Charlie Brown's teacher? "Wa-wa-waa-wwaa." (That'd be funny if you watched more Charlie Brown.)
Or how about listening to your date? Yada, yada, blah, blah, Cubs game, blah, blah, beer, blah, blah, pizza.

Or what about when your favorite project team member enters your office. He says, "Hi. Got a real problem I could use some help with. I'm having a tough time understanding the project requirements on this deliverable." And you hear, "Blah, blah, blah, problem, blah, blah, tough, blah."

It's not that you don't mean to understand your date or your project team member--it's just that you're not listening.

Quality Projects Take Time and Money

Have you had any great customer service lately? No? Me either.

Customer service, or the lack thereof, is unbelievable - especially in restaurants. My favorite watering hole, well it’s hardly a favorite, but it’s a safe distance from home, has some horrible service. It seems that the waiters, waitresses, bartenders, are more interested in their pub drama than in getting me my reuben sandwich and frosty brew.

So why do I go? Other than it being close to home, their food is tasty, the beer is always cold, and it’s priced right. I know what to expect and they usually deliver. When I visit, I can expect to be ignored, overlooked, looked over, and then eventually served. I can expect a fair price for a decent meal. I can expect the same end result every time. All in all, they meet my expectations.

Though we all have the same amount of time, it just seems to slip by me faster than it does other people. It's not that I'm lounging around smoking cigars, playing poker all night, and ignoring my work (okay, not usually). It's that I take on much more than I should and everyone suffers. And the projects that I take on magically grow from cute, innocent endeavors into eight-armed monsters that crush my schedule over and over.

Oooh - project management. Everyone talks about project management but what is it? Isn't project management just organizing your little work to get the big work done? Isn't project management really just a series of events to create some thing, by some point, way off in some hazy future? Not really.
